Texas Dealer Takes Advantage of the Credit Crunch

by Steve Cypher on Friday, October 17th, 2008

In a unique approach to customer incentives that includes taking advantage of low stock prices, one Texas dealer is offering customers 50 shares of General Motors stock if they buy a new car by October 31st.

Buy a Buick and Own a Piece of GM

Fridays can often get a little slow here at Auto Credit Express, so when this news crossed the desk, we just had to share it with you:

In an effort to bring more customers into the store at a time when domestic car companies are suffering through some of their lowest stock prices in years, one Texas dealer has come up with a unique “kill two birds with one stone” approach to marketing: offer 50 shares of GM stock to any customer who purchases a new GM vehicle.

Frank Kent Motors, one of Fort Worth’s oldest GM dealers, holds franchises for Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, GMC and Hummer. The original Cadillac store, in particular, has been owned by the same family since 1953.

Family bought 5,000 shares

According to an article in Automotive News, Will and Corrie Churchill, great-grandchildren of the founder and the current dealers, bought 5,000 shares of GM stock at the end of last week when the stock was trading near $5.00.

The Churchills realize that the cars they’re selling depreciate over the years, but if GM can turn the corner, maybe the stock will be worth more in the years to come.

Drive a Piece of America, Own a Piece of America

According to the information posted on their web site, under the “Drive a Piece of America, Own a Piece of America” program, the first 100 people to purchase a new GM vehicle from John Kent Motors between October 15th and October 31st will qualify for 50 shares of GM stock, on top of all applicable rebates and discounts. The stock transfer, itself, will be completed in 6 to 8 weeks from the purchase date.

The Bottom Line

While GM stock may not be the greatest deal around right now, if the General ever gets it together again, this could be the gift that keeps on giving.
