GM Pulls Plug on Certified Vehicle Incentive Program

by Steve Cypher on Monday, November 3rd, 2008

General Motors forced to terminate program early due to a lack of credit funding at GMAC.

Surprise, surprise!

You may be wondering why an article written last Friday at Auto Credit Express about GM’s incentive program for certified used cars was written with just 5 days remaining. Well, the fact of the matter is when the article was first written Friday morning, the program was supposed to continue through January 5th. Only after the article had been posted did we learn that the end date had been changed.

Hitting a moving target

Usually, we receive press releases here at Auto Credit Express from the various manufacturers on a regular basis. Because of the number of releases, we get to pick and choose which ones need to be reported right away as opposed to those that can wait. And while the certified vehicle incentive program was certainly worth mentioning, there seemed enough time (at the time) to write the story. It turns out that we were wrong.

Bad news, unlike good news, travels slowly

To make matters more difficult for many of us, the program’s launch was accompanied by a press release from GM, while nothing on either the GM or GMAC media sites would lead you to believe anything has affected the program. Only an article that appeared on the Automotive News web site said anything about the program’s demise.

New program to be announced?

That, as they say, is the story and we’re sticking to it. According to the same Automotive News article, GM spokesman John McDonald said that GM plans a different certified used-car incentive that will begin on November 4th. If that does happen, we won’t wait to print the story this time.
