Credit Crunch Only Takes Small Bite out of St Patricks Day
by Steve Cypher on Monday, March 16th, 2009Despite the fact that the economy has yet to show any meaningful signs of recovery the trend experts at American Greeting say Americans will spend over three billion dollars on the holiday this year.
Going green
Here at Auto Credit Express, we want you to know that, according to the most recent analysis by trend experts at American Greetings Corp, over 44 percent of Americans will take part in this year’s St. Patty’s Day celebration. And although they predict that spending will drop from previous years, they still expect total expending to hover around $3.3 billion.
Parades
According to American Greetings, one of the most common ways that people celebrate the feast of one of Ireland’s patron saints, and one of the most affordable, is by attending one of the many parades. As near as we can tell, the first parade was held in Boston in 1761, while one of the largest, with over 750,000 spectators (in 2006), has been held annually in Savannah, Georgia since 1824. Other major cities that hold parades include New York and, of course, Chicago where, every year, the Chicago River is dyed green.
An Irish Supper
While boiled corned beef and cabbage (along with the requisite potatoes) may not exactly be your “cup of tea”, those trend guys at American Greeting predict that nearly 30 percent of all consumers will choose to dine out as part of their celebration and more than 33 percent will be making a special meal at home with such “authentic” Irish dishes as over-stuffed Reuben sandwiches, potato soup and, of course, green beer, green vodka and most other liquid substances that will accept green food coloring.
Wearin ‘o the green
But even if you’re unable to spring for the dinner or a parade is too far away, you can still get in on the spirit of the day by wearing something green. According to those trend experts, 22 percent of consumers will decorate their homes in some way while fully 82 percent of us will be wearing at least something green.
The Bottom Line
Our thanks to American Greetings for their insight that proves you don’t have to spend a lot of money on St. Patrick’s Day to have a good time.
