Experian Beefs Up Identity Theft Protection

by Steve Cypher on Monday, September 28th, 2009

Bad credit car loan buyers can expect a higher level of identity theft protection as they rebuild their credit as Experian enhances its fraud protection program for all consumers.

ProtectMyID.com

At Auto Credit Express, it’s our job to match up consumers with bad credit with car dealers that can help them reestablish their credit and improve their FICO scores with a bad credit auto loan.

In addition, we also recommend a number of products from outside companies, one of which is AutoCheck, a vehicle history report service of Experian Automotive. We now see that the same company has beefed up its identity theft protection product, ProtectMyID.com with a number of improvements. These include:

• Active Internet scans that search for key indications of potential fraudulent use of debit, credit card and Social Security numbers
• Notification alerts that inform members when a change of address action is initiated so members can verify that the change was legitimate or determine if it came from an unauthorized source
• Members can now choose to receive notification alerts via email, text message or U.S. mail

Raise your score and keep it there

At Auto Credit Express, we believe that it’s not only important to raise your credit score by reestablishing your car credit, it’s also important that you make sure your credit isn’t damaged by identity theft.

“Identity theft continues to be a problem, and simply checking your credit report once a year isn’t enough to protect yourself against the financial loss and emotional strain that accompanies this crime,” says Jennifer Leuer, general manager of ProtectMyID.com. “While no one can ever entirely prevent identity theft, they can take steps to educate and protect themselves and get dedicated help if a theft occurs.”

And while Ms. Leuer’s comments may seem a bit self-serving since her company provides this service at a fee, even independent consumer organizations agree that daily credit monitoring does have its advantages, especially if you think your personal information has been compromised.

“If you suspect you have exposed some of your personal information to a scam artist, a good line of defense is to actively monitor your credit report,” said Linda Foley, founder of the Identity Theft Resource Center. “If you monitor your credit or subscribe to a daily identity monitoring service, like ProtectMyID.com, you can quickly discover changes to your personal information that may indicate identity theft.”

The Bottom Line

While monitoring your credit using the free credit report you’re entitled to every year from each of the bureaus is a good start, if you think your personal information has been compromised, signing up for a credit monitoring service can be a much more proactive way to thwart potential scammers.

At Auto Credit Express, our business is to help people with bad, blemished, bruised and tarnished credit buy cars and reestablish their credit at the same time.
