High Risk Car Loans through Dealers

by Steve Cypher on Thursday, September 20th, 2012

It can sometimes be frustrating finding something other than a tote the note dealer if you are someone with car credit problems

Finding a dealer

Consumers with less than perfect credit often have problems finding anything other than buy here pay here (BHPH) car dealers.

We know that here at Auto Credit Express because we’ve spent the last two decades helping car buyers with low FICO scores. Here is the reason thousands of them turn to us for help:

The right dealers

While hundreds of car dealerships advertise bad credit car sales, a good many of them turn out to be tote the note car lots – places that don’t report loans to the credit bureaus. Taking out one of these loan means you’ll have transportation, but neither your loan nor your car payments will show up on your credit reports. This means you won’t be helping your credit and you’ll be in basically the same credit situation the next time you need a car.

To make matters worse, a high percentage of these businesses are small used car lots that are not affiliated with a franchised new car dealership. This means the vehicles they typically stock are older, high-mileage cars that are often unreliable. Not only that, but if these cars have warranties (typically not the case), they’re usually very limited and cover only a short time period.

For their part, many franchised new car dealers don’t want the problems that are sometimes associated with customers that have near-prime or subprime credit scores. That’s because, unlike traditional financing, dealership employees that work with subprime auto lenders must undergo special training. In addition, dealers must stock the right kinds of cars. As a result, many of these dealerships don’t have the experience or the patience to maintain a special finance department while keeping the right types of vehicles in their inventories.

Car shopping

Fortunately, the internet has changed the way shoppers with good credit buy cars and also the way buyers with bad credit can find a dealer willing to work with them.

Specifically, websites such as ours match the needs of credit-challenged customers with dealers that are signed up with a broad range of lenders.

For customers with credit issues, these franchised new car dealers offer a number of advantages over BHPH dealers:

1.    You’ll choose a vehicle from a larger inventory.

2.    Because of strict lender requirements, these vehicles are either new cars or newer used cars with lower miles.

3.    Typically these cars are eligible for extended warranties covering a majority of the loan term, helping avoid potentially high repair bills.

4.    These lenders report loans and payments to the credit bureaus, helping you establish auto credit and raise your FICO scores.
