Myths can sometimes cause more headaches than bad credit does. Many advertisements insist that you need to bring your vehicle to the mechanic on strict regular basis. But is this truth or just a gimmick for more business?

Urban Legends About Motor Oil

Motor Oil Myths
Well it turns out one of the experts in the auto industry, Edmunds, had the same questions too. So to clear the air, they released an article addressing the "Top 7 Urban Legends About Motor Oil". Here is some of what they had to say:

  1. 3,000 miles or 3 months
Created by many quick-oil change companies, this is a major myth for most modern vehicles. Experts agree you should go by your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. Check your manual to see what your schedule should look like.
  2. Change your oil before trips
While it may not be necessary to change your motor oil every time you take a road trip, it is a good idea to have your vehicle looked over by a trusted mechanic. If your regularly scheduled oil change is during your trip, go ahead and take care of it before you leave. However if nothing is scheduled to be changed during your trip, hold off until after you return.
  3. "Severe" maintenance cycles
Quick-oil change companies would like you to believe this myth. "Severe" maintenance cycles are for vehicles that tote heavy trailers, race, or idle for long periods. Normal stop-and-go traffic should stick to the schedule laid out in their owner's manual.
  4. Black oil, means time for a change?
Today this is an old school method of checking your oil. Black oil still has plenty of life in it. It's when the oil starts to become thick that you need to get to your mechanic quickly. By sticking to the manufacturer's recommendations though, you shouldn't come across this too often, if at all.
  5. New cars need an oil change after 3,000 miles
According to the experts at Blackstone Laboratories; there is some truth to this. Oil samples have shown a higher level of "wear-in" metal during vehicles' first 3,000 miles. If your manual has break-in recommendations you should follow these and consider an oil change after about three months.
  6. If you use Synthetic Oil once, you always have to
"A straight up myth…" says Edmunds. As long as your oil meets your engines requirements you can switch back and forth as much as you'd like.
  7. Synthetic Oil improves mileage
While these oils may help to lubricate your engine better than traditional oils, no facts have been found to provide truth to this myth.
