Hopefully you never have to experience your vehicle breaking down. But even worse, hopefully you never experience a breakdown on a busy highway or freeway! Knowing what to do and being prepared for anything are the best ways to keep you and other drivers safe on the road.

At Auto Credit Express, we know that one of the best ways to keep your credit situation from going to bad to worse is to take care of the car you have. So today instead of auto loan help, we'll be sharing a few tips from Dummies.com with you.

  • Try to coast away from curves behind you in the road while on the shoulder
By doing this, you'll be in a great place to spot oncoming traffic when you are ready to get back on the road. It also gives other drivers time to give you a little space if the road is slightly narrow.
  • If your engine dies immediately and you can't get off the road, then the best place to be is in your car.
Getting out of your car while still on the road is extremely dangerous, especially if at night when drivers may not be able to see you.
  • Put a white cloth or paper in your window so other drivers know your vehicle is in trouble and not moving.
This is particularly smart to do if you are on a busy highway because they are typically heavily patrolled. An officer will be able to find you quickly when he spots your white flag.
  • If you know you'll need roadside assistance, use your cell to call your auto club or highway patrol.
Remain in your car while doing this. If you don't have a cell phone, just hang the white cloth or paper from your window.
  • Never work on side of your vehicle that is facing traffic.
This will protect you from getting hit by a passing car. If you can, pull off into a wider area that put both you and your car further from moving traffic.
  • If it is during the daylight, turn on your hazard lights. If it is at night, put out reflectors if no traffic is around you.
Hazards during the daylight hours can help drivers see you better and know that you are in trouble. At night however, drivers may not know if you are moving. If it is safe to do so, place reflectors behind your vehicle for better visibility.
