Before we had cars, trucks and SUVs on the road, there were pedestrians and even motorcycles. Being a defensive driver is the best way to learn how to share the roads.

Motorcycles were first invented in the mid 1800's. Before that, people had been going wherever their feet or horses could take them. When the first cars were invented towards the late 1800's, they took over the roads.

It's important to remember that though your car may be able to keep you safe from harm, it can cause harm to those not in a vehicle. Here are a few tips to help you share the road with pedestrians, motorcyclist and cyclist.

Give Some Room

Tailgating is never a good idea; it's an even worse idea when it comes to following a motorcycle. When you are passing by pedestrians and cyclists too, make sure you give them and yourself a good pocket of space. You never know when someone may fall down, and in result, land right in front of your tires.

Slow Down

When you cannot safely pass, just slow down. Trying to speed by a possible obstacle is not only dangerous, it can be deadly for everyone involved. Speed is still one of the number reasons for auto related deaths.

Be a Mind Reader

Okay, maybe you're not psychic, but you can drive like it. Be prepared by keeping your eyes open and scanning far enough ahead of you to be aware of any obstacles you may face from anyone that's on the road with you.

Prepare For the Worst

If you're ready for the worst-case scenario, then you’ll usually be most ready to prevent an accident happening. If you see someone running towards you then be ready for them to fall. If you see a motorcycle ahead of you, be prepared to slow down or stop if they need to turn or have an accident.
