For most credit-challenged consumers, the inability to locate a dealer that offers auto loans for people with bad credit normally leads them to their local buy here pay here car dealer. This can be a problem because in most cases these dealers don't report loans or car payments to the credit bureaus.

The results of this type of loan mean that the credit scores of these people remain largely unchanged. In addition, a very high percentage of these loans result in repossession - locking them into a vicious circle of high down payments, loan defaults, and asking what happens if my car gets repossessed.

But if you really want to reestablish your credit, how do you go about finding a lender that offers auto loans with bad credit?

If you have good credit - that is, if your FICO score is over 640 or so, you can shop around to credit unions, banks and a variety of other lenders to get the best possible interest rate. If your credit score is below a 640 FICO, or if you have a limited credit history and no co-signer, finding a lender that will consider you is more difficult.

The major issue for bad credit car loan buyers, however, is that nearly all of these lenders don't participate in direct lending. In order to qualify for one of their programs, you'll have to visit a car dealer that has signed up with them. So what can you do?

One solution is to call around to different dealers. But if you do, chances are they'll just tell you to come in and fill out an application. The good news is that you might get lucky and get approved. The bad news is that if you don't get approved it could prove to be embarrassing as well as a waste of your time.

But you do have another option. One of the easiest ways to find one of these dealers is to go to a bad credit auto loan web site. In addition to a bad credit auto loan application, many of these sites also feature a resource section that includes informative videos as well as a number of auto loan calculators that will walk you through the screening and application process.

The best of these web sites specialize in placing customers with bad credit with dealers that can help them. These dealers are knowledgeable and work with a wide variety of bad credit lenders to ensure you have your best chance at getting approved for a second chance auto loan.
