What consumers with questionable credit will need in terms of identification in order to begin the process of applying for an auto loan

Our experience

It may not happen too often, but when an applicant with poor credit either forgets to or brings in the wrong type of identification sometime during the car loan process or, worse still, at the time of delivery it can bring everything to a halt.

At Auto Credit Express we understand why this can happen because we've spent the past two decades helping car buyers with problem credit locate those franchised new car dealers that can give them their best opportunities for auto loan approvals.

Helping out these shoppers includes educating them about some of the rules that must be followed in order to know how to get a car loan with horrible credit.

Lender rules

Even with a car loan approval in hand, there are a number of issues that can arise that could bring the entire loan process to an abrupt end. One of these problems concerns the proper identification both the dealership and the lender will need by the time of delivery.

This means that in order to avoid either a trip back home or even the possibility of being unable to pick up your new vehicle, this is what they'll need to know:

Prior to actually taking l delivery of a new car, approved applicants need to present a valid photo driver's license as proof of identification. This means that even though a copy of it may have been made previously – for instance for a test drive – car buyers should still bring it along for a number of reasons:

• The salesperson might have forgotten to make a copy
• Even if a copy was made, it may have been lost or misplaced
• Buyers will need it to legally drive their new car off the dealer's lot

In any case, if the buyer cannot produce a valid driver's license at delivery, the process can quickly get complicated.

Driver license issues

Once the license is presented, a copy will be made and placed in the deal folder along with the other loan documents.

The driver's license must be current and valid (not expired or suspended) and issued by the state in which the buyer resides. The address listed on the license also has to match the address that was supplied on the credit application.

In a growing number of states the dealer is also required to verify that the driver's license is valid by checking with the department of motor vehicles (DMV). If the results of this verification process show that the license isn't valid (due to outstanding tickets, fines, suspensions, etc.), than this will also bring the delivery process to a halt.

The Bottom Line

When taking delivery, buyers need to be sure that they come in with a valid, current driver's license that reflects the correct address – even if this means taking a trip to the secretary of state's office beforehand. If not, chances are they'll be unable to pick up their new vehicle.
