The Importance of Sobriety Behind the Wheel

Driving under the influence of alcohol is both extremely dangerous and illegal. It can also lead to large fines and penalties if you are convicted. However, these reasons do not stop everyone from drinking and driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that 10,265 people were killed in drunk driving accidents in 2015. Organizations such as the NHTSA and MillerCoors have recognized this issue and are offering innovative ways to keep intoxicated drivers off the roads this holiday season.

Virtual Technology

Sober Driving

The NHTSA is using virtual technology as part of its “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign to educate drivers about the dangers of drunk driving. This virtual world, called “Last Call 360,” can be accessed through smartphones, computers, or tablets. Once a user steps into it, he or she is taken to a virtual bar. This person can then order virtual drinks, interact with other virtual guests, and play virtual games.

After the user moves on from the bar, he or she gets behind the wheel of a virtual car.  The experience quickly ends when the flashing lights of law enforcement appear. While the world only portrays what could happen if you drive intoxicated, it sends a powerful message that drunk driving could be extremely costly if done in real life.

Discounted Rides

Brewing company MillerCoors is taking another approach to keeping drunk drivers off the road. Instead of developing new software, they have partnered with Uber to give people discounted rides until New Year’s Day.

As part of the $350,000 plus program, MillerCoors is giving Uber users in several different cities up to $10 off. These cities include:

  • Columbus, OH
  • New York, NY
  • Charlotte, NC
  • Miami, FL
  • Louisville, KY
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Minneapolis, MN
  • Denver, CO
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • Houston, TX

This program is a continuation from last year, when MillerCoors provided discounted rides to people in more than 100 markets.

Act Responsibly

Although organizations like NHTSA and MillerCoors are working to keep you safe, it is important to make smart decisions, yourself. You can do this by either choosing a designated driver before you go out or thinking of another way, in advance, to get back safely.

If you see someone else that is about to drive drunk, step in and/or call the proper authorities. Don’t stand by and let a family member or a friend get behind the wheel while impaired. Your actions could save another person from being seriously hurt or killed in an accident.
