The Recall ABC’s

The U.S. Justice Department has started their investigations into how General Motors handled their most recent recall of 1.6 million vehicles that had fault ignition switches. The main focus is to see whether GM might have violated any law by failing to notify the regulators in a timely matter. The ignition switches have been linked to at least 12 deaths so far.

With all this information going on in the headlines, it may leave some drivers unsure about the safety of their vehicle. There are so many people out there that do not know how to handle a situation in which their vehicle or auto parts have been recalled. Do you?

Steps to Handle a Recall

Should You File Your Taxes with Your Spouse?

If you purchased your vehicle when it was new, the manufacturer should have your name and contact information on file in the event that they need to alert you to safety concerns. However if you bought your car used, you may want to contact the dealer that you purchased the vehicle from or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, also known as the NHTSA. Follow these steps to make sure that you properly handle the event of a recall.

  1. Acquire your recall letter.
Whether it’s sent electronic or through snail-mail, you should receive a letter from your vehicle’s manufacturer. With some of the newest vehicles, the letters are sent directly to the car’s computer system. This letter will let your dealer know exactly what the recall is, how to fix it, and that you have a legitimate claim.
  2. Bring your automobile to the dealer.
Next you’ll want to get your car, truck or SUV to your dealer ASAP. Don’t wait till later as you may find yourself and your loved ones in a very unsafe situation that could cost lives. Bring your vehicle to the dealer and let them repair it. There should be no expense to you.
  3. Consider another vehicle.
Sometimes, your car may end up with multiple recalls; sometimes one after another. While most of the time this is meerly an inconvience, sometimes it may be wiser reconsider the vehicles safety and if you are better off getting a new vehicle altogether.
