Set up your own

The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act allows consumers to get one credit report at no charge from each of the three bureaus every 12 months. This is in addition to laws that allow people to receive reports at no charge if they are denied credit, discover errors in their reports, or if they suspect they're a victim of identity theft.

You can also set up your own monitoring program. By ordering a report from a different bureau every four months, you can set up what is essentially a free credit monitoring service on your own.

In addition, if you find any reporting errors from one bureau such as an account that isn't yours, you can immediately order reports from the other two under the ID theft free report system. You can also order an additional report, at any time, if you are denied credit based upon information from a specific bureau.
